Real Estate Taxes

Real estate shall include all lands, buildings and mobile homes located in the Town of Alton.  Also included in the land assessment is any improvements to the land including well and septic.

Personal Property Taxes

Personal property shall include but not limited to portable mills, store fixtures, office furniture, fixtures and equipment.  Also included are unlicensed camper trailers, tractors, cargo trailers, television and radio transmitting equipment.

Tax Bills

Tax bills are mailed to the name and address of the owner on record as of April 1st. If you receive a tax bill and no longer own the property, failure to forward the bill to the current owner may result in a lien being placed against your name if the bill is not paid. Bills are usually mailed in August, with the due date October 1st. The bill will reflect any payments that have been made.  Interest begins on October 2nd at the rate indicated on your tax bill. The tax bill covers the period January 1 to December 31 of that year.

Tax Remittance Instructions

We accept payment in the form of cash, check, or money order made out to "Town of Alton".  If mailing, send payment to Town of Alton, 3352 Bennoch Road, Alton, ME  04468.  Enclose a self-addressed envelope if you would like a receipt.  Payments are applied to the oldest delinquent taxes first.

Vehicle Registration Excise Tax

The Excise Tax you pay on a vehicle stays in the Town and helps reduce property taxes.
